I’d advise you to restrict the available space for your dog to roam in the house. You should use either a crate or baby gates to achieve that. The message you’ll be sending to your dog this way will be “There is no toilet inside.” This taps into a dog’s natural instinct to not soil where they sleep, eat or play.
However, you must be consistent with walking. A routine will help you and your dog. Time how often your dog needs to go and increase the intervals in which you take him out. For example, ensure you take him out 20 minutes before the set time so youd on’t have to rush or run out.

In reply to Nancy. Hi Nancy, thank you for sharing! Puppies have the advantage of being quick learners. So if you stick to the tips, your puppy will quickly learn what you want her to do. Depending on their age, bladder control is a factor too. Do you use a crate or baby gates to restrict access at home until she learns not to go inside?

My dog is 10 months old. I was using pads all along. Now he’s lifting his leg and peeing on things. We have not beem consistent with walking. I’m in an apartment in NYC and one flight up. No grass. Concrete. And we have carpeting. He’s not neutered yet. Please help. It’s frustrating and I am 66 and can’t run out quickly.

Every dog is unique and it sounds like barking is your dog’s peculiarity. 🙂
Luckily, you can work with that.
If done right, the training can serve as a learning curve and mental stimulation for your dog.

We have a perfectly trained dog except for barking. Everyone that meets him loves him and compliments him on his behavior. As a new puppy (9 weeks) he slept through the night and doesn’t get up until we wake up. He goes and does his business on command. Couldn’t ask for a better dog. His favorite movie is Lion King and enjoys watching TV if it’s not good weather.
